Twenty Things To Do During Self Quarantine

These past few days have been hard, haven't they? Some people have been in isolation since last year, while others have been in this situation since earlier this year. On the streets, people are telling each other how they are on quarantine, while others are saying they are on lockdown... And the rest of us are on self isolation.

Before we get to the fun part, let us start by clearly defining three key terms that have been flying around from our mouths and the radio to the television.

°•°•°•°•

1. Isolation: okay, I will define this in a very simple way. This is a term used when someone who has a contagious infection gets separated from everyone else.

This term has been used rather loosely by a lot of people... Even me. I sort of went off the grid for a while after it was officially announced that COVID-19 was in the country. If you don't have the disease, you cannot say you are isolating. However, if you do suspect you have been exposed to the disease, there's something else that happens.

2. Quarantine: this term has been used much lesser than self isolation or isolation. In quarantine, you have been exposed, or might have been exposed knowingly or unknowingly, to the causative agent of COVID-19, for example. While waiting to develop symptoms, you are put into quarantine.

3. Lockdown: now, I am going to look at it as a massive quarantine on a country affected by a disease outbreak. Not just any disease though, but a highly contagious disease like SARS and MERS.

Side note: SARS, MERS and the dreaded Bird Flu are all Coronaviruses. So was the Spanish flu.

Now, we are at the fun part of the blog post. This time, I wanted to do something that was a little more encouraging because news is already depressing.

Many people don't spend time in their houses. Right now, the contagion is forcing people to stay home for their own safety, and for others too. That moment when you discover that you have to stay in 24/7 can make you suddenly feel claustrophobic.

Don't worry though. I have a few things to suggest to you.

1. Clean your house.
So, you haven't been cleaning regularly, right? How about you do an awesomely big spring cleaning gig? Are you too tired to do it? I have an idea that can motivate you.

2. Dust off the radio
See, no one can deny the allure of the radio. This is the best time to tune into Kiss or Nation FM, or whatever other station you like, and keep abreast with everything going on around you.

3. Wipe your windows
Ddu-Ddu-Do it to that beat you like best. Your windows will thank you.

4. Do your dishes
Yes, don't leave them in the sink!!!

5. Redesign or Rearrange
Whichever you like! You can even choose to paint one wall of your sitting room a different colour.

6. Learn new words
Yes, this would be a very good time to improve your language skills, especially for that one that you claim to be fluent in but aren't. I am looking at you, Le Français!

7. Learn the words to that song
Do you have that one song you like so much but can't sing fully because you don't know the lyrics? Yes, I am looking at my Starmaker Kpop covers. I feel your pain.

8. Reconnect with God
This can be a very good time to renew your relationship with God. If you feel alone, or have very few friends, you can read the Bible and pray. Supplicate even.

9. Call your family and friends
See, work has had you so busy with deadlines that you can't even find out how your kith and kin are faring. Why not call them in between breaks?

10. Learn to dance
You just might need this skill when the quarantine is lifted. All those postponed weddings... There must have been at least one you were invited to?

11. Watch re-runs of your favourite shows
Netflix and chill is real y'all!

12. Try Karaoke
Smile says that singing is good for your health. It is about time you tried it out, right?

13. Skid down the corridor with socks on
I did this a lot when I was younger. It was fun.

14. Learn a new language
So, you've wanted to know what 'Señorita' means? Go ahead and learn Spanish! Wonder what that 'Onion' word was? It is time you learnt Korean then! Have you always wondered what they say in 'Shuga: Cotê D'Ivoire'? You should be getting a French Dictionnaire from Google Play right about... Now!

15. Learn a new skill
Couldn't cook before? This could be your time to take one step at a time.

16. Play Acting
Would you like to own a Youtube channel? Or Tiktok? Maybe VSkitz? You know you can get them on Google Play or Applestore, right? Don't hesitate.

17. Read novels
Have you never had time for that book you bought last year? Well, now you should be reading it out of boredom.

18. Try micro gardening
Have you ever tried planting things in small spaces? You should do it now then. If you like it, you can do it even when you are better.

19. Sanitise and Rehydrate
We should remember how important it is to do both. Okay?

20. Exercise
Do not do it to lose weight, but enough to keep your airways open and your blood moving.

°•°•°•°•

So, those are all I could think of. There are many other things you can do. Don't be limited by this list. Let your creativity keep you occupied.

I can't overemphasise on the importance of washing hands, self isolating and rehydrating. Do not forget to move around your house.

Please stay safe and I will see you in the next post!

Annyeong (Goodbye, for now)
Me.
